    KEFLAVIK AIRPORT

    Spotting Info
  • On the southwestern tip of the island, and as such, the weather can be harsh at times. It's not a busy airport and traffic often comes in waves so it's best to check the airport website for details of movements.

  • There are views of the ramp either side of the terminal, and if you're flying out, once airside there are great views along the pier, including the cargo ramp. If you have a car, you can follow the main road 41 that skirts along the eastern perimeter and there are places to stop for photos if runways 20 and 29 are in use. Round at the disused base, F4 72-1407 marked "66-300" is preserved by the US Navy Command building.

    Planespotting Hotel
The Aurora Star Hotel is a very short walk from the terminal. It's a fairly new hotel with six floors, but for the time being, only the first three floors are in use. As you can see from the photograph below (taken from room 202), rooms x02, x04, x06 and x08 have views of the west side of the terminal pier. Beyond them is runway 11/29 and you will see the movements regardless of which direction. Runway 02/20 is out of site beyond the terminal building, and the cargo ramp is out of sight to the right. As you're so close to the terminal, it's a short walk to view what's parked up on the other side of the pier.
The Airport Hotel Smari features on for reviews, prices and room availability

    REYKJAHLID AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Only open during the summer months and for pleasure flights, if you're nearby Myflug operate the strip and have three aircraft in their fleet. And you may see one or two helicopters alongside Lake Myvatn.

    REYKJAVIK AIRPORT

    Spotting Info
  • Located in Reykjavik city, it's easily accessible by bus. There are roads almost all the way around the perimeter, allowing you to visit the various nooks and crannies to log everything, make sure you allow plenty of time, especially if you're stopping and asking for access everywhere. The Domestic Terminal is on the far side of the airfield but there are plenty of buses to take you over there if you don't have your own transport. No problem with taking photos anywhere around the perimeter.

  • Very close to the terminal is the Icelandair Hotel Reykjavik Natura. From round the back of the hotel, you can log those parked out on these aprons, and those parked out over the runway. On this eastern side of the airport, there are often aircraft parked out on the various ramps and outside hangars all the way round the complex. Ask for access to the hangars at the Aeroclub, they are friendly, but you'll get better results if you contact them in advance to arrange your visit. Also ask if anyone can show you round the hangars on the west side - they may do so if time allows - and mention that you want to photograph the DC3s. The Coastguard also sometimes allows access so ask the guys at the Aeroclub if you or they could ring the Coastguard to let you round their hangar. Also ask them if they could put you in touch with the Historic Aircraft Society - you'll probably find some people in the club are already members.

  • Head out of the terminal area, turn left and turn left at the next three sets of crossroads to take you round the northern airport perimeter. This road takes you to the Domestic terminal and the various GA hangars. If there's anyone here, and you weren't able to get access via the Aeroclub on the east side, you can ask for access here.

  • Continuing round the western and southern perimeter, you'll come across more GA hangars, where you can also ask for access. You will find round here, just outside the perimeter fence, what remains of the fuselage of DHC8 TF-JMB after its crash in 2011.

  • Head back to the terminal but continue past it, heading south. Turn right at the roundabout and you'll reach the Coastguard hangar (plus another GA hangar beyond it) - again, if you weren't able to get access via the Aeroclub, ask in here, they are friendly.

    SELFOSS AIRFIELD

    Spotting Info
Just west of Selfoss town and alongside road 34. Friendly, ask for access to the hangars.
