Spotting Info
You can go up towards departures and before the security, follow the stairs to 'SAS offices'. The viewing area has closed but you can get limited views of some aircraft parked from the glass leading up to the viewing area. For the cargo ramp, turn left out of the terminal and follow the footpaths right behind the various buildings. Keep looking left for gaps between the buildings to log a few more as you go. At the end of the cargo buildings the road bends round to the left, giving you views across cargo and towards the terminal ramps. For the remote stands south of the terminal, turn right out of the terminal and head through the long term car park to the fence for views. After security, domestic and international flights seem to be separated. A good place to view from downstairs is gate 18A-G as it extends onto the tarmac and you can get the cargo and commuter side ramps.

Planespotting Hotels - its location is marked in the Spotting in Sweden download
The Landvetter Airport Hotel is just a short walk from the hotel but also has a shuttle bus. I don't yet have any details on good room numbers or if any have views, but due to it's proximity, all above viewing spots are easily within walking distance.

GOTHENBURG-SAVE AIRPORT (ESGP/GSE) - TWR 119.05, 129.1

Spotting Info
Home of Aeroseum, a fantastic aviation museum inside a declassified Swedish Air Force bunker carved out of solid rock. 35598 Draken is preserved alongside road 159 at the main entrance. The museum also hosts an excellent annual air show. On the civil side, there is a cafe in the terminal with reasonable views as long as any airliners present aren't blocking the view. The small viewing area above the cafe has better views though, and from the fence alongside.

MALMO-STURUP AIRPORT (ESMS/MMX) - TWR 121.7 / APP 135.125

Spotting Info
There is a small, free, open air viewing area on the right side of the terminal. From here you can see the stands to the right of the main pier, the runway and cargo. This area is next to the multi storey car park and by going up the stairs in the corner there are limited views to some of the hangars. Walking to the left of the terminal and through some of the open air car park, you can see the stands on the left hand side of the terminal. This area is also visible from inside the terminal to the left of the check in area. South of the terminal area is the hangar complex and maintenance area. You can get round most of it and is often worth a look to see what's parked outside. There was a security gate there but it isn't manned and as long as you conduct yourself properly, you won't be bothered, such is the friendliness of the Swedish. On the fire dump, south of the hangar complex and fairly near runway 35 threshold, are 32915 SAAB Lansen badly burnt and in 3 sections, and LN-KLP Caravelle - look out for these on arrival and departure as it's likely they won't be visible from the terminal area. To see the Caravelle, leave the terminal area via the main entrance/exit and take the first left after some distance. You will past a race track on the right and the Caravelle will come into view right in front of you as you approach a sharp right bend. Continuing down this road takes you to a small aero club.

STOCKHOLM-ARLANDA AIRPORT (ESSA/ARN) - TWR 123.1, 123.3 / APP 118.5, 125.125 / GND 121.7, 121.975

Spotting Info
On the way in/out of the airport, alongside the main 273 road is N981JM B742 - the Jumbo Hostel. SE-DEC Caravelle marked "SE-SAOB" is with the fire brigade alongside 01L/19R, near the 19R threshold. Caravelles SE-DAF and SE-DAI are parked alongside 08/26 and are visible from the spotting mound. SE-DAA Caravelle marked "SE-044" is used as a de-icer trainer alongside 01R/19L. Traffic can get very very slow here, and is slower still at weekends. During the week, cargo flights lands around midnight and only tend to stay 1-2 hours. As is the norm with Scandinavia, it's expensive, though the Pressbyrran newsagents are the cheapest places if you don't require a full meal.

Landside Terminal Spotting Info
All of the terminals are interlinked landside with a walkway, which is largely along the edge of each ramp and glazed along the length. Starting from Terminal 5 (international), you can walk from terminal to terminal logging as you go. Sky City is the food and shopping area between Terminals 4 and 5, and offers views of one of the main ramps and of runway 01L/19R, which is often used for departures. No problems spotting from here but it's not good for photography due to the glass. To get here, go to departures, go up the stairs at check in desk 33 and the cafe is right in front of you. Terminal 3 (domestic), which you can walk down without a ticket, offers superb views of the commuter aircraft (great for the evening rush), remote stands and a view of the cargo and biz ramps. The Rai Bar and Restaurant on the first floor of Terminal 5 is accessed via an escalator in between the check in desks. Has views of Terminal 5 ramps and not as busy as Terminal 3 or Sky City. Staff don't bother you if you don't buy anything either. Great view of runway 01L/19R as well as aircraft taxiing in from the others - runway 08/26 is away to the right and you can log any on approach to 08. Most will taxi into view at some points either on arrival or on taxi out for departure, and an SBS will help for spotting in the dark. However it closes at 7pm. Keep an eye on the runways though, as they can change every couple of hours. The far pier of Terminal 5 and the SAS hangars are not visible landside, but you can log what's parked there once you've gone through security. Viewing is so good landside that there's no need to go airside until you really have to.

Spotting Mound
Outside the airport there is a viewing mound and shelter and is the best place for photography depending on runway usage. From any terminal, board Bus 583 heading towards Arlanda (NOT Marsta). Costs around 30 Kroner and runs every 15-30 minutes depending on the time of day. The route takes you in and out of the hangar areas, past the Statoil petrol station and just after it runs under the large bridge carrying a taxiway from the new runway, the bus turns left up a side road. Usually takes 10 minutes to get to this point. Look up to your right and you will see the viewing shelter and mound. The bus then turns right and stops outside the LSG Catering factory, where you get off, walk back a few yards across the car park and up the steep climb to the viewing shelter. You can walk here from the terminals but it takes around 25-30 minutes. There is a picnic table as well, all located on a steep hill, adjacent to the new taxiway, linking the new runway to the terminal. But there are no food facilities. You can board the bus back to the airport from the opposite side of the road to where you got off. Please note, on the way back to the airport, the bus destination will be Marsta.

Planespotting Hotels - their locations are marked in the Spotting in Sweden download
  • The Radisson Blu Sky City Hotel is located between Terminals 4 and 5 and you can get rooms overlooking their stands and runway 01L/19R. Even numbered rooms between 526 and 548 have panoramic views across to the apron but banners hanging from the ceiling spoils the view. Although the views are more at an angle, the closer to 526 you get, the less the banners block the view. Good weekend rates here, but weekends at the airport are far quieter than during the week.
The Radisson Blu Sky City Hotel features on for reviews, prices and room availability

  • The Ibis Stockholm Arlanda Airport Hotel doesn't have any airport views but it's a short walk east for views overlooking 01R/19L with the de-icing trainer SE-DAA Caravelle off to the left. The shuttle bus will take you to the terminals for landside spotting and you can get the bus to the viewing mound if you wish.
The Ibis Stockholm Arlanda Airport Hotel features on for reviews, prices and room availability

  • The Jumbo Stay Hostel has the novelty of being a B747-200 - N981JM. Rooms are quite small as you can probably imagine, but the room rates are good, free Wi-Fi, airport views including the cargo ramp and walking distance to the terminals.

    Transfer to Stockholm-Bromma Airport
There are various options for travelling between the two airports. Visit the very friendly, helpful and knowledgable staff at the Information desk in the arrivals hall. From the city centre you'd need to take the train and connecting bus. For example, the Central Station/T-Centraalen, where both the direct coach and trains from Arlanda arrive - the coach costs 219SKr return, taking at least an hour. The train costs 245SKr single. Airport Buses (covering all the airports). The SL Travelcard is excellent value for money at 100 SEK for 24 hours or 200 for 72 hours. That works right out to the end of the line and out on bus 583 and for the rest of the area too, which means you can go to Bromma and go sightseeing. But these tickets aren't valid on either the coach or the Express train.

    STOCKHOLM-BROMMA AIRPORT (ESSB/BMA) - TWR 119.4 / APP 123.3 / GND 121.6

    Spotting Info
Best to visit during weekday peak hours as the flights tend to come in waves, weekends are very quiet. Turn right out of the terminal and after a short walk behind the buildings you will see the picnic area alongside the taxiway. Great views of runway movements and the nearby Grafair biz ramp that's often busy, but the terminal stands are hidden by buildings. You can turn left out of the terminal and look for gaps between the buildings over to the large GA area, though it's not that much of a walk over there and the BAM hangar has windows in the back to log the inmates - just follow the perimeter road round. SE-CCX CV440 is stored opposite the terminal and visible from the elevated car park area. Also possibly visible on arrival and departure, there is a bicycle track and footpath that runs round that side of the airport. You can park in the golf club just south of the airport and follow the track round behind some GA hangars. Keep looking across to the terminal as you may get some views.

    Spotting Info
Home of the F11 Museum. The best place to log movements is from the mound next to it. SE-ILX VLA-1 Sparven hangs from the ceiling in the terminal. Gripenskolen Technical School are friendly, ask for access. The SAAB hangar, to the left of the terminal as you exit it, has large windows at the back for you to log what's inside and 35609 Draken is displayed outside the hangar, visible from the road that runs alongside the hangar. Some of the other hangars in this area also have windows at the back to look in and log the inmates, including the F11 Museum. Nyge Aero is also worth a visit just up the road along Flygspanarvagen. The Aero Club on the north side is approximately a 30 minute walk from the terminal area, just follow the perimeter roads round the east side of the airport and it's on the left. An2s RA-02754, RA-2156K and SE-KYV are stored here.

    Transfer to Stockholm-Arlanda Airport
The airport bus, Flygbussarna, from Skavsta airport to Stockholm city takes around 80 minutes and is around 119SKr, around half the price of the train. There's also a further discount if you book on line before you go. Off-peak the journey time is reduced such that it's not that much longer than the train. The local train runs every half hour to Marsta, takes 35 mins and you can get bus 583 from right beside the station which takes about 10 minutes to get to Arlanda airport. Of course there is also the airport bus from the city. The 583 goes right past cargo on the way to/from the airport, stops at the terminals and continues right up to terminate near the spotting hut. There's more on bus 583 in the Stockholm-Arlanda section above. Airport Buses (covering all the airports). The SL Travelcard is excellent value for money at 100 SEK for 24 hours or 200 for 72 hours. That works right out to the end of the line and out on bus 583 and for the rest of the area too, which means you can go to Bromma and go sightseeing.
