PRESERVED & STORED AIRCRAFT IN DENMARK - their locations are marked in the Spotting in Denmark download

A-525 F-84G Thunderjet is in poor condition lying on its belly in a childrens playground behind a building marked Povlsbjerg Bionehaue on Ostergarde in Vojens. Quite difficult to see in the summertime with the trees in full bloom. Last reported November 2009
G-AVMN BAC1-11 fuselage is stored in an industrial estate off on Bornholmsvej in Slagelse. Last reported May 2009

AARHUS AIRPORT (EKAH/AAR) - TWR 118.525, APP 119.275

Spotting Info
Just west of Tirstrup off Primaerrute 15. Most of the apron can be seen from the cafe in the terminal. The light aircraft are west of the terminal and apron. Turn left out of the terminal and follow the hedgerows to the left. There are two access roads on the left leading to the hangars but I don't know about access.

BILLUND AIRPORT (EKBI/BLL) - TWR 119.0, APP 127.575

Spotting Info
These viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in Denmark download. There's a small viewing area on the 2nd floor, which is very quiet and fine for spotting but no good for photography as you are looking through two sections of glass with a fair distance between the two and railings obscure the view. To the right of the terminal is a raised area, where you can get some pictures of aircraft parked at that end. On the southside of the airport are several GA areas that can be walked to from the terminal. If you don't fancy the walk, you can get a bus from the terminal to Legoland. Turn left out of the terminal and follow the perimeter road south, reading aircraft off as you go. The first light aircraft area is in the southwest corner of the airport opposite Legoland. You can try asking here for access but I don't know if it's possible. Beyond the main biz terminal area are more hangars and aprons. Most hangars have glass windows and are well worth looking in. At the last set of southside hangars, on the other side of the road, is a small gliding club. Again, I don't know if they are friendly or not.

Flyvergrillen Viewing Area & Cafe
These viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in Denmark download. Head out of the terminal and towards the taxi rank outside the terminal near the railway station. Jump in a taxi and ask for the 'Flyvergrillen' (pronounced Floo-er-grillen if the driver has trouble understanding you!) just off 'AMAGER LANDEVEJ' as there are two possible locations. Takes about 5 minutes to get there and costs around 80DKK. Alternatively, take bus 250S from the airport and ask the driver to let you out at the point where you can connect with bus 73, which will take you further - cost 2.50EUR or 15.50DK and takes half an hour. Or it's a 30 minute walk from Terminal 1, 45 minutes from Terminal 3, and that's a brisk walk - turn left out the terminals, head past the domestic Terminal 1 and turn left after Gate Gourmet. This is Amager Landevej, just follow it straight down to the end. The viewing area is free to enter, has hot/cold refreshments at the cafe, restrooms, raised seating areas, very good views of the runways and no hassle whatsoever. It overlooks the active departure runway 22R. Arrivals on 22L are quite easily read off even when they turn off short. The elevated area looks over the top of the high fence and photography is excellent in the afternoon when the sun is behind you. No views of any aprons however. A favourite place for locals and visitors alike and many comment at how friendly and helpful everyone is. Cafe is open from 10:30am-dark but you can still spot from here when it's closed and parking is free. You can't see the apron from here, but you get excellent views of the manoeuvring area. The raised mound is not covered so if it rains you'll have to shelter in the cafe, which has good views, part of which are blocked by the mound. Please use the cafe if you do use the viewing area, just remember Danish prices are high.

Airside Spotting Info
If you want to stay airside, then head for gate B19 at the end of pier B. This is an excellent place with views of arriving and departing traffic and the near side of piers A and C. There are no views of the very busy remote commuter stands at Terminal 1 and the far sides of Piers C and D at Terminal 3, where the long haul flights park, but all flights will taxi in to view at some stage. If they are departing off 04L you have to be very quick with the regional aircraft as they are high by the time they get to you and the curve in the glass can make things difficult. In order to get these views you can spot from Pier C - when these gates aren't being used there is usually no one around and is very peaceful. You won't be hassled here either and is a good place to stay until the 'Flyvergrillen' opens. To spot from Pier C, go through passport control (no boarding card needed) and instead of going to the gates, go up the escalator following signs for D gates, but turn right and go to curved window. Gate A12 at the end of pier A gives good views of all movements, very similar to B19 at the end of pier B. When A12 is being used for a flight you will probably be asked to move but they are happy for you to stay the other side of their desks. The views are still the same but the aircraft on gate A12 will block views of movements 04L and you will miss any that don't taxi in front. If you want photos of taxiing, departures and arrivals, go to the Flyvergrillen. If you just want to log, it would probably be better at B19 or A12, but then it's a question of personal choice. Another useful piece of information - you don't need to go through customs and check in landside. There are transfer desks by the entrance to Pier B. I have confirmation that Servisair will check you in for the easyJet flights, but I don't know about the other airlines. There are no views landside at the terminals.

Other Viewing Areas & Useful Spotting Info
If you're unable to get to the Flyvergrillen or go airside, good views can be had from car park P12 about 200 metres from Terminal 3 - turn right out of Terminal 3, head towards the SAS hangars and you'll see the signs. There are toilets on the ground level, a McDonald's further up the road by the petrol station or the usual eateries in the terminal. 3 GA areas, of which only one can be seen from Flyvergrillen, but it's not possible to read off anything from there. Take bus 30, bus stop between T2 and T3, ticket price 19 DKK - you get off at the bus stop right after the DHL buildings next to the old SAS-commuter hangar and from here you can also see the cargo area including two of the three AN26s usually parked there during week-ends, and sometimes a West Air Europe ATP. BUT in order to find out whether its worth the trouble, right after you pass customs, turn right immediately, go through the exit doors and pass the TAXI area, heading for the parking house. Go up to floor 6, there's an elevator. Once there you have a somewhat distant view of the cargo area but you should able to read off any freighters, but none of the biz jets which may be parked behind them. For this you will have to take bus 30 as described before. The second GA area, which is quite small, is also visible from here. The 3rd GA area can be seen from the domestic terminal (T1). There are some windows where everything can be read off - you can grab the free terminal bus outside T3 running every 10 min - this is the most used GA area. You can take a stroll past the SAS hangars to the approach to 22L. After exiting the Terminal, turn right and walk behind SAS Cargo and around behind the SAS hangars. If you're lucky, some of the hangar doors will be open and the inmates can be easily read off. This road is Kystvejen. Carry on towards the approach lights and sit on the large stones that line the roadside just past the 22L centreline. A good place to stay until dark. The view from here is excellent - everything on approach plus the hangar ramps, remote commuter ramps and freight ramp. This road continues down to cargo and the SAS commuter hangar and the end of runway 12/30 if there are some parked here you can't read off. If you've wandered the terminals already, you won't need to worry about not being able to read most of the departures from here. You can reach this spot by free bus from the Terminal to P17 if you don't want to walk. Just over the road is car park 15, and free busses run from here to the terminal every 15 minutes. Due the grounding of SAS DHC8s, many are parked outside the maintenance hangars and around the airport so keep a good lookout from the terminal and whilst taxiing in and out. LN-PIP DC8 (marked "ILN-R" on the port side only) is stored here for use as a trainer and for towing so gets moved around. On the fire dump in the southeast part of the airport, sadly inbetween two large grass mounds and therefore difficult to see, are A-018 SAAB Draken F35, OY-BVH F-27, OY-BZW SA226 Metro and the fuselage of OY-STD Caravelle. If you have a car it's easy to drive round the airport and on the quieter roads you can quickly stop to read off the registrations.

Planespotting Hotels - their locations are marked in the Spotting in Denmark download
  • The Hilton Hotel is connected to Terminal 3 via a covered walkway. It has 4 separate wings so ask for a room with an airport view. Room 834 on the west wing faces the airport and most movements can be read off with small bins. More powerful bins or a scope mean you won't miss much at all. Rooms 831 to 835 face the airport on this wing but rooms on the 9th or 10th would be even better - due to the way the widebodies taxi in and park towards the hotel, the extra height means they can also be read off. If you can't get higher than the 8th floor you can walk up to the 9th or 10th floors should you need to as there are convenient windows, but don't loiter up there.
The Hilton Hotel features on for reviews, prices and room availability

  • The Copenhagen Go Hotel is a cheaper alternative to the Hilton and is basic, no frills but clean. There's no courtesy bus so if you don't have a hire car, a taxi, bus or possibly the easiest option is the train to the airport. Or you could walk. The train is 21DKK one way, takes 4 minutes and runs every 10 minutes. The bus is also 21DKK but takes 15 minutes and runs every 20-30 minutes. Also just 2 miles from the Flyverfillen. No views of the airport or movements either. There's nowhere to eat in Tarnby village and all shops shut at the usual time - you can get takeaways delivered, stock up at the airport before you get here, or there's a shop at the train station up the road.

    KALUNDBORG-KALDRED AIRFIELD (EKKL)

    Spotting Info
Just to the west of Kaldred village off Eskebjergvej. Friendly, ask for access and you should be allowed to walk along the hangar entrances but you'll have to ask at each hangar for permission to enter them. Beyond runway 27 threshold on the left are a couple more individual hangars beyond the bushes, though you will have to ask for permission to walk to those too.

    Spotting Info
The main general aviation airport for the Copenhagen area. A slow drive towards the main terminal will allow you to read off what's parked out on the apron and again, a slow drive round the GA hangars area will allow any parked outside to be read off.

    Transfer from Copenhagen Airport
To get here from Copenhagen, at the main railway station there is a frequent rail service to the main station at Roskilde. Leave the main exit from the station and there are several bus stops outside, with a bus about every hour towards the airport. Only about 2 a day go directly to the airport, the others drop you on the main road which is about 20 minutes walk to the airport entrance. If you're travelling with others, a taxi to or from Roskilde station is not too expensive, should be roughly £15-£20.
