PRESERVED & STORED AIRCRAFT IN POLAND - their locations are marked in the Spotting in Poland downloadCZESTOCHOWA-CENTRUM SZKOLENIA STRAZY POZARNEJSpotting InfoStored at the Central School of State Fire Service (Centrum Szkolenia Strazy Pozarnej) in Czestochowa town are 1224 TS-11, 1603 An-26, 4603 Mi-2, SP-SAP Mi-2, SP-SFE Mi-2, 7819 Su-22 plus an unknown helicopter and an unknown An-2 - if you know the identities of these, please let me know, thank you. From the track that runs alongside the north part of the school, you can look over the fence to see the aircraft. There's also a road that runs close by along the western edge of the school for views through the trees. Last reported January 2010. Want to update or confirm the information is still correct? Send in a report KRAKOW-BALICE AIRPORT (EPKK/KRK) - TWR 123.25 / APP 121.075Spotting Info Just west of Krakow town and well signposted. There is a viewing deck on the 2nd floor of international Terminal 1. Open 0800-2000, entry costs 2 PLN through a turnstile so you'll have to pay each time for re-entry and there are no toilet facilities. Cold and hot drinks machines are present though, useful as it's often very cold as it's only semi-enclosed and the grass has a green tint to it, affecting any photographs. The main apron is right in front of you, with domestic Terminal 2 and whatever GA and biz are in, on the right. The military area is out of sight to the left, beyond the trees. You'll need to make sure you're sat on the correct side on arrival and departure to see and log these, often CASA295s and An26s. You'll need a right hand seat for arrival, and if you land on 25 you'll taxi right past. However if you land on 07 you'll speed past them on landing and taxi straight off to the terminal. If they're using 07s on your departure flight, a seat on the left window will be great as you'll taxi right past them, though their parking angles may be tricky to read them off. Beyond the main apron, and beyond the trees, you'll see the runway 25 threshold. The rest of the runway is also off to the left and therefore out of sight beyond the trees. Consequently, any arrivals on 25 will fly by before you have a chance to read them off, unless you have a radio or SBS to monitor them. All 07 arrivals are out of sight but you'll log any arrivals regardless of runway usage, as they taxi into the terminal area, unless of course, they taxi to the military ramp. Once checked in for your flight, there are windows overlooking the apron where everything can be logged. Gate 4 has no views, but you're allowed to enter gate 3 next door which does. If you want to leave the terminal building and follow the perimeter round to Terminal 2 you can, there are a few views of the aprons, but there isn't a real need to unless you're after something specifc parked remotely at Terminal 2 that you can't get from the viewing deck. Send in a report KRAKOW-MUZEUM LOTNICTWA POLSKIEGOSpotting InfoOn the site of the former Krakow-Rakowice-Czyzyny airport towards the northeast part of Krakow city off Aleja Jana Pawla II. A lot of exhibits are outside but it's an excellent museum so try to get here if you can. Entry is 10 PLN, open Tuesday-Sunday 0900-1700 but please note, although entry on Tuesdays is free, you are only allowed round the outdoor exhibits. Approximately 200 aircraft here, so you'll need several hours, but not all may be on view. There appears to be some sort of external storage area just to the south of the main outdoor museum and behind a couple of buildings. You'll need to have a good look round all the buildings as there are frames dotted around outside. There are also storage hangars not usually accessible to the public, so ask for access to them while you're there, or better still, arrange a visit in advance. Access is easy via the No.4 tram from Lubice, get off at WIECZYSTA and walk 400m north straight on to the museum. You'll pass through a short wooded area and it's on the other side. Or you can use tram No.15. It can be difficult to find, so if you don't have a SatNav and don't have the Spotting in Poland download, your hotel should be able to call a taxi for you to take you there, and after your visit to the museum, ask at the museum office for a taxi back to your hotel. They're very helpful and taxis are not expensive at all. Their guides are also very friendly and extremely helpful and are familiar with spotters. If you contact them in advance and someone is available for your visit, you'll often be taken to areas not normally accessible to the public, to look at their restoration projects or long-term storage exhibits and possibly the Polish Police hangar. Polish Aviation Museum Last reported October 2010. Want to update or confirm the information is still correct? Send in a report LAPINO-ART METAL PRESERVEDSpotting InfoThe Art Metal factory and grounds are just west of Lapino village and house 6 military aircraft and helicopters. Some are displayed outside on hard stands, the others are inside the factory behind the hard stands. Two Mi-2s and an An-2 are stored round the back of the buildings. Ask at the office for permission to photograph the aircraft. This should either be granted, or a quick phonecall to the owner to confirm it's ok. You'll then be able to walk around, or be escorted around. You may need to ask specifically to see the aircraft inside the buildings, and/or the stored aircraft behind - these are possibly behind the wall at the back so just peer over it. If you get really unlucky and access is denied, there is a gate on the east side of the premises that should give views across to the aircraft outside. It's obviously best to visit during opening hours, but if you do turn up outside of these hours, the place is guarded by security guards. If you ask them, they are usually happy for you to look at and photograph the aircraft. Last reported July 2010. Want to update or confirm the information is still correct? Ask at the aeroclub for access to their hangars, you should be escorted round. The military helicopters fly from the south side of the airfield and some serials can be read from this aeroclub on the north side. For other views of these helicopter, turn left out of the aeroclub onto the 227 towards Pruszcz Gdanski town and head right round to the left at the first roundabout. This takes you southwards, alongside the railway line on one side and the airfield perimeter on the other. After the end of the runway, take the first left onto Dywizjonu 303 and past the garages. As the road bends right you'll see the helicopters in front of you, and you can read them off from here. You can follow the fenceline down towards the main road to possibly read off a few more. A quiet airport, only about 4 flights per day, plus the based light aircraft and Police helicopter, so check the airport website before your visit. The open air viewing terrace opens around 20 minutes before a flight arrival, closes upon its departure and costs 2 PLN per entry. There are also x-ray machines to scan your belongings as you go through. The light aircraft area is not visible from the viewing area - turn right out of the terminal area and look through the trees on the right for the light aircraft. You will shortly come across their hangars and police helicopter. Ask at the flying club and hangars for access but I don't know if they're friendly or not. The Aeroclub hangars are on the north side - there is a man with a gate, but immediately in front of the barrier is an open car park, from here you then walk to the back of the hangars and onto the airfield. Very friendly, ask for access. A former PWL An-2 fuselage is here used for parachute exit training. The former military area is on the south side however their dispersal is now used by the Police and they have maybe 3 or 4 Mil 8 based over here plus one Jetranger. This area is visible by going along Himalajska (this street shows on Google Earth) - you will end up behind a long row of car garages, keep your eyes peeled to the left. Also here as you enter Himalajska is the military air academy - their hangar and apron is visible and if you are lucky some of their GIA frames will be outside, including Mig 21, Iskra, Yak 40, Su 22 and Mil 2. If you have a car, keep going west towards Grotowska - here is the Cafe Zepplin which is next to the tall ATC tower. Send in a report WARSAW-FREDERIC CHOPIN (OKECIE) AIRPORT (EPWA/WAW) - TWR 118.3 / APP 128.8 / GND 121.9Spotting Info Following the demise of the viewing terrace due to the continuing redevelopments, the only place to watch movements is from the bus terminus just beyond the terminal buildings. Turn right out of the terminal and it's on the right. Very few stands can be seen from here so you'll have to wait for the movements to taxi past. Large windows enable a full view of the shorter runway 29/11 though it's 33/15 that's usually in use. Runway 33 movements won't be a problem - all departures will taxi right past you and arrivals are easily read off, but 15 arrivals may turn off the runway too short. 15 departures may also be a problem as you will see them too late. A radio will help provide warnings of imminent arrivals and departures. For the northern military ramps, head out of the terminal, turn left and walk along the front of the terminal to where the road comes in and the car park is right in front of you. In addition, the terminal extension has panoramic windows overlooking this military ramp, both landside and airside. Mornings are busy but mid afternoon is extremely quiet. There are no views once you go airside. The military ramp and hangar area can be seen as you arrive at Terminal 2 so make sure you sit on the correct side. The biz ramp is out of sight to the north, to the left and beyond the LOT hangar ramp, which is in turn beyond the military ramp. If departures are on 15 or 11, sit on the right side of the aircraft and be handy with your camera on take off. Views airside are excellent. Check the Schengen stands before you pass through passport control as you can't go back. Preserved & Stored Aircraft Last reported March 2011. Views of the 4 aircraft stands and light aircraft parking area on the grass opposite. Situated in line with runway 29 threshold but behind Terminal B - if 29 is in use, arrivals can be read off if you're quick but they disappear behind Terminal B rapidly. If 11 is in use, you'll have to wait for them to taxi in, so if they use the western cargo parking area well away from the terminal then you won't see it. No power points up here for SBS. Turning right out of Terminal A and walking round the building, you can walk through the car park to read any that can't be logged from the viewing terrace. You can also turn left out of Terminal A and walk through the car park to log the Ambluance helicopter if it's parked up. You won't have any problems with airport security. You can't see the cargo area at all from anywhere around the airport, you're only chance is on arrival and departure. Runway usage will dictate whether you taxi slowly past it, or zoom past on departure so mini bins or a camera will be beneficial. 8007 MiG21 is the gate guard at the old military base entrance. The gate here is still manned and they don't allow photographs. It's easily seen as you drive past - on the right as you're leaving the airport. Last reported July 2009.
