PRESERVED & STORED AIRCRAFT IN CZECH REPUBLIC - its location is marked in the Spotting in Czech Republic download

B-2911 Mil-2 is preserved at the Czech Police Museum. Exit Vysehrad metro station, it's on the red line, and you'll see a large road bridge over a big ravine with houses below. You will see a large building with 3 domes on the roof at the far side of the bridge, follow your nose towards that, this building is the Police museum. Once you're there after about a 15 minute walk, the entrance is round the opposite side, go into the entrance and there is another door opposite leading into a garden. The Mil-2 is outside on the right hand side under the trees. Last reported September 2011

Included in this section but not actually at Bohunovice airfield, is OK-PLB LET200 preserved on a pole at the petrol station on road 46, next to the main road into Bohunovice village.

Spotting Info
Museum is open from May-October 10am-6pm but closed on Mondays. Entrance is free. There are three distinct storage areas here. The first is just inside the main entrance to the right and contains mostly fighters and helicopters (although a very early production Turbolet is also here). From this area you can also see a few movements on Kbely Air force base. Further to the left is the line of displayed helicopters culminating in the CSA Tu104. Beyond this and on the airfield are a number of stored transports, including an Li2, IL18, Yak 40: most can be identified. Next to the displayed Migs, Sukhois etc is a roofed shed and in here are two Mi2s and two AN2s. Don't forget to visit Prague-Letnany airfield, the entrance is a short walk up the road from the museum entrance.

To Visit Via Public Transport from Prague Airport
Buy a travel ticket from the bus/tram/metro desk in the airport terminal costing around 80Kc for a 24 hour ticket. This ticket enables you to travel on any bus, tram or metro train. Transportation maps are available from the desk. When you board your first mode of transport, put the ticket in the machine so it stamps a date and time and validates it. There are no barriers at any stations though random ticket inspectors operate. From the bus stops opposite the terminal find the one for bus 100, they are frequent. This bus will take you to Zlicin metro station on the yellow metro line and takes 15-20 minutes. The bus station is outside the metro at Zlicin. Then catch any train as Zlicin is a terminus and stay on the train until you reach Palmovka, takes around 30 mins. Exit the station making sure you follow the "bus" signs as there are several other exits. The exit up the stairs will take you into the bus station and at the far end on the left is the stop for the 185 bus. Catch the 185 and this will take you to "Letecke Muzeum", journey time is 12 mins. There are electronic signs displaying the next stop on the route, when Letecke Muzeum lights up press the bell, you will see the Mig 21 gate guard as you arrive at the stop. To return follow the same route in reverse, there is a bus stop on the opposite side of the road to go back to Palmovka station.

To Visit Via Public Transport from Prague city centre
Travel on the Metro Line C (red on the maps) to the northeastern terminus at Letnany. From here there are at least 4 bus routes that go right past the main entrance to the museum (two stops).

General Info
The airport has 3 terminals. Terminal 1 and 2 are at the main area, with Terminal 3, used by GA, biz and military away to the east. Terminal 2 is used by the 'Schengen' airlines with all others using Terminal 1. Airside, there's no access between terminals, so pier C is out of bounds if you're travelling from Terminal 1, and vice versa. These viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in Czech Republic download.

Public Transport
The public transport around Prague city is excellent, very easy to use and very punctual.

Terminal 1 Spotting Info
  • On arrival to Terminal 1, you can stay airside for views of all stands on its piers A and B, the main runway 06/24, and can freely wander up and down these piers as security is passed through at each gate individually. There is a bar at the end of Pier A for a particularly good place to spend the day, though Terminal 2's pier C is out of sight. Gate B16 also provides reasonable views though any aircraft parked on the other side of piers A and C are out of sight. You can see all movements and the main runway from pier B though, particularly the end of pier B, so you won't miss any non-commuter movements here.
  • On the first floor, there is a restaurant with a door leading to a viewing terrace. It's enclosed in glass but no roof and gives views of one half of Pier B and one half of Pier C. Pier A is not visible at all, however you will see everything that moves from here.
  • There are views of one side of Pier A at the side of check in. GA and military are not visible from the terminal (landside or airside), as they use the separate Terminal 3 away to the east.

    Terminal 2 Spotting Info
Terminal 2 is used primarily by those airlines flying to the 'Schengen' countries, and it is from here the ATRs depart. All the aprons of Terminal 3 can be seen from Terminal 2, from the glass wall at the far end (opposite end to pier C), but a good scope is needed to read off the aircraft. There is a viewing area at Terminal 2, which looks over a set of gates on pier C of Terminal 2 and pier B of Terminal 1. Most movements use the 06/24 runway directly in front of you so all movements can be seen. However the ATRs depart on the smaller 13 runway out of sight of the terrace, which is at 90 degrees to the main runway and you won't see them taxi out either. By far the best place to spot is once airside (and if travelling just for the day) then stay airside as long as possible - going landside only to check out maintenance/T3.

    Other Spotting Info
  • Car park C, directly opposite Terminal 1, overlooks the main runway 06/24 so you can see all movements and some parked at the terminal and cargo area from the top level. From a stair well at one end of the car park it is possible to record all arrivals using runway 24 and most of the departures. The exceptions being the ATRs, Dash 8s etc that tend to depart from halfway down this runway. This spot also overlooks one of the de-icing bays but only has partial views of some stands due to the height of the terminal roof. The other runway, 13/31, (to your left and over your shoulder and joins the main runway in a T) is often used by the smaller aircraft (up to ATR size) and with care the majority of movements using this runway are identifiable from here. Mainly used by light aircraft, bizjets and ATRs they take off at either direction, seemingly at random so you need to keep an eye on this. No hassle on the car park and is a popular place for locals to wave goodbye. Behind you are the preserved DC-3 detailed below, maintenance, GA, Terminal 3 and military area. By walking around the car park you can log most parked by the hangars and on other empty areas but some are quite distant and at an angle. You can get a better angle on this from the top level of deserted car park A below - for this, bear slightly right upon leaving arrivals/departures, cross the road keeping the new terminal on your right. I believe this car park A is now for employees, but no one seems to mind you being there at the moment.
  • The top level of car park A has better views of the maintenance, GA, Terminal 3 and military area. To get here, bear slightly right upon leaving arrivals/departures and cross the road keeping Terminal 2 on your right. I believe this car park A is for employees, but no one seems to mind you being there at the moment.
  • OK-KGE Aero 45 marked "OK-KGF" is hanging from the ceiling in the arrivals hall.
  • There is a replica fuselage of an Avia BH-25 near the entrance to the viewing deck in the walkway linking Terminals 1 and 2.
  • N143J DC3 marked "OK-XDM" is displayed outside CSA headquarters and can be seen from the top of car park C. If you want photos, it's only a short walk away.
  • There are also reasonable views by turning left out of the terminal. Lighting on the ramp is reasonably good allowing most, but by no means all, movements to be noted after dark from the restaurant. Bus 100, which goes to the metro station, stops at the GA area.
  • Buses 119/120 run regularly from Terminals 1 and 2 to Terminal 3 so you can log the biz parked over there and by the airliners by the CSA hangars.

Planespotting Hotels - their locations are plotted in the Spotting in Czech Republic download
  • The Hotel Tranzit is in the airport, between Terminals 1 and 2. No views of the airport but depending on runway direction, aircraft departing can be read off as they appear about 1000ft up past the window. An SBS box will ensure you miss nothing and you're only a short walk away from the very good car park C mentioned above.
The Hotel Tranzit features on for reviews, prices and room availability

  • The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel is across the road from Terminal 1, and while the views from the rooms aren't great, you can spot from the corridors on the higher floors for views of anything moving to and from the aprons. It's also right next to the very good car park C mentioned above.
The Courtyard by Marriott Hotel features on for reviews, prices and room availability
