BONNYBANK-BALGRUMMO STEADING AIRFIELD

Spotting Info
Head east through Leven town on the A915, straight over the A955 roundabout then turn left at the mini roundabout onto Cupar Road. The road bends right, then turn left at the crossroads onto a track. Follow it almost to the end, where it turns sharply left and leads to the hangars. If they're shut, there are a couple of gaps.

FIFE/GLENROTHES AIRPORT

Spotting Info
Just north of the B921 before the turn off for the B922, west of Glenrothes. Follow the signs for Leslie and the Golf Course. Turn left at the Golf Course and follow this road for a mile or so and the airfield is on the left. Ask for access to hangars though it will probably be refused. A yellow jacket or vest is advised and a tour may only be possible if staff have time.

KINGSMUIR-SORBIE FARM AIRFIELD

Spotting Info
Head south out of Kingsmuir on B9131. At crossroads turn right on B940 and take next right for strip. Keep your speed right down as you travel along the track round the farmhouse. You then have to cross the runway threshold, so stop and look both ways, don't just glance, and then proceed with extreme caution. Friendly, ask for access at the control point. If the hangars are locked, there are plenty of gaps to look through.

Spotting Info
Southeast of the town and on the coastline. Follow the signs. These preserved aircraft and viewing spots are marked in the Spotting in the UK download.

  • At the main entrance, XT864 Phantom and ZE967 Tornado are the gate guards, ask the guards if you can photograph them, permission has been granted before, following a polite request. Nearby, the cockpit of Harrier XW265 is on display at 2345 Squadron ATC.

  • For the stored XV586 Phantom you have to drive past the main gate, turn right and follow the fence round. It will come into view in front of you.

  • XR713 Lightning is the gate guard for 111 Squadron on the south side and can easily be viewed between the shelters from the A91 to the south of the airport. You can also see stored XV582 Phantom from here too - park your car at Fast 'n Fresh, walk back 200 yards and from here you can see the Phantom in front of the HAS area.

  • To stay for any length of time, the only place to park up is just as you exit the A919 and head towards the base on Main Street. There is a fairly large area for lots of cars to park and from there you can pick your vantage point. Easy to see the main ramp and read off the movements. Good for photos of 09 arrivals but you're looking at the base through a tall fence. There is also a field on the west side of Main Street you can walk up and look straight down the main runway. Also for 09 arrivals there is a hill with a mast on the other side of the railway line - great view to be had here and is very popular during the show.
